Resolutions: 2009

January 3, 2009 · Leave a Comment

Looking back on my 2008 resolutions, I’m reminded of Mick Jagger singing, “You can’t always get what you want.  But sometimes you get what you need.”

Well, sometimes you can’t do exactly what you’ve resolved, but end up getting different and more important things accomplished.

2008 felt like a transition year.  Slowly, things are changing, mending.  There’s been stress and frustrations and less money; but also more possibilities now than at the end of last year.

Although no one ended up offering me money for my property so that I could move, my other wishes for 2008 have come true.

Obama became president.  And thankfully, as it turned out, John Edwards was not part of the ticket.  The Democratic Primaries and the Election took over a lot of my thoughts at times.

It seems grassroots support for green, sustainable living is growing too.  Although, still at a slower pace than I’d like.  Still, it’s amazing how a kick in the coin purse will motivate people.

As for my 2008 resolutions…

I didn’t get around to painting the porch or any other major home improvement project.  Most of the summer I had to work evenings as well as attend classes in the morning.  What time I did spend on the house was to make unexpected repairs to the roof and plumbing.

I didn’t really delve into Photoshop as much as I wanted and explore all the fancy bells and whistles that would help me restore old family photos.  I did, however, spend bells-and-whistles-ish time learning Microsoft Word, Excel, Access and PowerPoint.  I’ve also begun to learn more about operating systems and get my feet wet with web design code.  In fact, it seems I have a knack for computers.  In class, others have regularly turned to me for troubleshooting document or spreadsheet problems during labs.  Sometimes even the instructor.

Aside from a Berger/Mitry mystery and “Cradle to Cradle”, I didn’t come close to reading twenty books.  However, I’ve been reading textbooks regularly; and perhaps the amount of material I’ve read (and reread) for assignments and research papers comes close to twenty novels.

And maybe textbooks are what I needed to read because it wasn’t until school that I learned how lax my thinking process had become.  One of the greatest things about last year was that I was able to engage in discussions and share ideas about the enviornment and politics.

I didn’t pay off the car.   If I hadn’t spent $700 getting my trees pruned I could’ve paid it off in December.  On the other hand, if I hadn’t then the windstorm that barrelled through Dayton in September would’ve removed those limbs for me.  And the damage to the back fence and my neighbor’s van would’ve cost more than $700 to repair.  Anyway, I’ll still manage to get the car paid off seven months ahead of schedule.

My credit card debt is only slightly below what it was at this time last year, but considering I used it to charge for things such as car and home insurance, getting it below the original balance is a good thing.

I didn’t consolodate all my VCR tapes and handwritten journals to hard drive storage.  To be fair, the video capture device got fried during a thunderstorm this summer and couldn’t be replaced until November.  I did manage to get rid of stacks of typewritten journal entries from nearly twenty years ago, although that ended up stirring up some unresolved issues that manifested themselves in some troubling dreams.

My Resolutions for 2009

Learn Photoshop
Learn CSS and Java Script
Blog more
Consolodate the rest of the VCR tapes.
Reduce my credit card debt down to three-fifths of what it is today.
Knock down some walls in this house
Learn to cook a new dish from scratch

Wish List

Learn how to install glass block.
Someone offers me money for my property, so I could relocate to a better location.

Resolutions and Wishes for 2008

January 2, 2008 · Leave a Comment

I believe it’s good to make resolutions for things you want to accomplish in a year as well as to make wishes for things you’d like to happen.

My resolutions for 2008:

  • Finish painting the porch.

Goodness knows there are lots of household projects that I’ll be working on this year, but finishing the porch, especially stripping the inside ceiling portion, will take a lot of time and would be an accomplishment.

  • Pay off the MasterCard bill or the car in full.

I’d actually like to pay off both, but paying off at least one would be great.

  • Consolodate all VCR tapes and handwritten journal entries onto a digital format.

These last couple of years I’ve been working at organizing and simplifying my life.  Emptying two stacks of eight total totes and consolidating it all onto an external hard drive and a flash drive would be a major accomplishment.  I’m actually excited about this one.

  • Read at least 20 books.

Works of fiction or non-fiction.  Graphic novels don’t count.  I used to read.  Words meant something.  I want to go back to that.

  • Learn Photoshop

Back before my old hard drive crashed, I was learning the basic toolbox functions with Adobe’s “Classroom in a Book” for Photoshop 5.0.  Yeah, that’s how long I’ve had the program.  But a couple months ago I reinstalled it onto a new hard drive with the intention of learning more about how layers and all the other bells and whistles work so I can restore some old family photographs as well as play around with pictures I’ve taken with my digital camera.

 My wishes for 2008:

  • Someone will offer me money for my property so I can move.

Seriously.  McDonald’s?  Krispy Kreme?  Please, buy my property.  I will sell it for a fair price.  A drug store chain almost bought it years ago.  I’m tired of living on one of the busiest, nastiest streets in Dayton.  I’ll continue working on my house, but I’d move in a heartbeat if I could.

  • Someone qualified gets elected President.

Right now I thinking an Obama/Edwards ticket would be great.  The nation needs a leader to help us start coming together and working on building a better future.

  • The grassroots support for green, sustainable living continues to grow.

While the national government drags its feet, the interest around the nation is building.  2007 seemed like the year more people saw how green also meant practical.  I believe that interest will only continue to grow.

How many 2007 resolutions were resolved?

December 31, 2007 · Leave a Comment

Last year at this time I wrote down four things I wanted to accomplish in 2007.  Now it’s the end of the year and time to review.

Resolution Number One: End the year on better financial footing.

That included reducing my MasterCard account which was close to $6,400 down to $2,500 or less.  I got it down to $2,930.  However, earlier in the year I had to switch to a high speed internet provider when the old dial-up connection made getting the TurboTax file updates impossible.  (Couldn’t make headway on resolution number one without the boost of a tax refund.)  The cost of upgrading and getting more RAM and a 256MB graphics card cost a little over $400.  So in a way I did meet that goal.  And cutting my card debt by less than half was an accomplishment.

I succeeded in paying extra on my car payments.  If I continue at this rate I should be able to pay it off three or four months in advance.

I also succeeded in paying the property taxes and car and home insurance off in full by check and not with my credit card.  Unfortunately, I haven’t started investing. Not because I don’t want to or know what to invest in.  Just that I don’t have the money.

Resolution Number Two: Simplify–Organize and Declutter

Well, I managed to sell off that antique bedroom set that I never used and never liked, but I didn’t transfer my VCR tapes to DVD.  I did organize the good ones from the ones without any footage worth saving.  But being green hearted, I couldn’t just throw the bad ones in the trash.  But I finally found a place that recycles old VCR tapes last month, so maybe I can accomplish that in 2008.  And I didn’t remove the old bathroom sink and stool from the basement and take them to the plumbing salvage yard.

Resolution Number Three: Fix the old hard drive.

Unable to because I found out it might cost anywhere between five hundred and fifteen hundred, and I couldn’t afford that this year.  Maybe next year.  Or the year after that.

Resolution Number Four: Paint the porch.

I’ve finished most of it, the hardest part.  I just need to get the inner portion of the porch roof and the trim boards around it stripped and painted.

All in all: not a bad year.  Could have been better though.
